How to Choose the Right Shot Power

A decision rule for draw strength, condition by condition.

Draw power is the least understood control in the physics games. More is not better, less is not safer, and the right answer depends entirely on what else is happening.

The decision rule

Draw hard when there is wind, when the target is expiring or moving, or when the range is near the maximum. All three are cases where flight time is costing you.

Draw softly at short and mid range in calm conditions against static targets, because the steep descent makes your errors visible and correctable.

Build a default

Pick one comfortable draw for mid range and use it for everything unless a condition above applies. Then adjust angle rather than power on most shots.

This is not laziness - it is what makes a miss interpretable. Two variables changing at once produces results you cannot learn from.

Elevation overrides the default

Shooting uphill needs more power than a level shot at the same horizontal distance, because the arrow spends longer climbing and arrives slower.

Shooting downhill needs less. Castle Archer, where you shoot from a wall, is where most players discover this by overshooting an entire wave.

The discrete tiers

Games with Low, Medium and High settings use fixed speeds of roughly 480, 760 and 1,080 pixels per second, so a tier feels identical across every game that offers them.

Medium is the default for a reason. High is for wind and range; Low is for short precision shots where a steep arrival is an advantage.

Key takeaways

  • Draw hard for wind, movement, expiry and maximum range.
  • Draw softly for short and mid range calm shots where errors need to be visible.
  • Establish one default draw and adjust angle instead.
  • Uphill needs more power; downhill needs less.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stronger draw score more points?

No. Points depend on which ring you hit. Power only changes where the arrow goes.

What is the default I should use?

Whatever mid-range draw feels comfortable to repeat. Consistency matters more than the specific value.

Why do my shots overshoot in Castle Archer?

You are shooting from a height, which adds range. Use a shallower angle or a shorter draw than you would from ground level.
